Students get taste of war The reality of fighting in the trenches at Gallipoli was graphically illustrated at Richmond School on Monday when children were given an interactive tour of an Anzac-themed display set up in the school grounds. During term two each year, the school focuses on one topic as part of their enquiry learning. This year the topic is Aotearoa and each week teachers focus on a specific subject, this week’s topic being Anzac Day. Its aim is to give children authentic learning experiences as opposed to just looking at pictures in a book and the Gallipoli display certainly exceeded expectations. The amazing collection of items included a WWI military ambulance and Jeep provided by Roger and Dot Humphries, a replica Vickers machine gun, original WWI rifles supplied by RSA

member Stuart Mirfin and army uniforms while teacher Nicole Lams brought her family’s Gallipoli medals. School caretaker Dean Wilkinson also found the school’s Roll of Honour and gave it a coat of varnish so it could be displayed outside an army tent guarded by pupils Lochy Mirfin and Matthew Galletly who were dressed in WWI New Zealand and Turkish army uniforms. Lochy says he couldn’t believe that one of the soldiers shown in a photo in the display was only 15. “He lied about his age to get in the army,” Lochy says. “He’s only five years older than me and he went to war - it’s really scary. Lochy says his great, great, great uncle Darcy was killed at Gallipoli.

Richmond roads ‘not working’

Commuters are using Richmond’s residential streets as state highways as they continue to avoid the traffic lights on Gladstone Rd and the problem will only get worse with key commercial developments planned for the town. That was one of the conclusions in the Tasman Regional Land Transport Plan for 2015-2021 presented to the Tasman District Council at their meeting last Thursday. The report concludes that

State Highway 6 is “often congested” during peak traffic and that the internal ring road around Richmond’s town centre was “starting to show signs of inefficiency”. As a result, drivers are using residential streets as “state highways’ to avoid the congestion with figures showing significant increases in traffic on Hill St, Champion Rd and Hart Rd since the lights were installed on Gladstone Rd between 2009 and 2010.

Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz Richmond councillor Judene Edgar says the report simply tells residents what they already know but admits there’s no easy answer. “Champion Rd, Hill St and Bateup Rd are residential roads and they are being used

as state highways - they are Richmond’s avoidance ring-road,” Judene says. “I know people from Golden Bay who drive straight through the roundabout at Three Brother’s Corner and go up Bateup Rd and along Wensley Rd to get to Richmond or Nelson and avoid the lights.” Judene says the traffic problems on the narrow Bateup Rd are going to get worse

with the rapid residential development in Richmond South and a supermarket planned for the former Bay Nursery site on the corner of Bateup and Gladstone roads. Another consequence of drivers avoiding the lights on Gladstone Rd is that “we are getting a lot of speeding issues on Hill St and Champion Rd because they are nice wide roads,” Judene says. Council transport manager Gary Clark agrees that there “are no easy answers” but stresses the traffic congestion on Gladstone Rd can’t be resolved in isolation. However, Gary says council and the New Zealand Transport Agency are aware of the problem and will be commencing a study to find some solutions later this year. “It’s difficult because we only have two roads going from Richmond to Nelson and that puts a constraint on the options. I personally think that four-laning Gladstone Rd and Whakatu Drive through to Annesbrook is the best long term solution but that will cost a lot of money.” Gary says another option that had been raised by the Nelson City Council would be to extend

Hill St through to Suffolk Rd in Stoke to provide a third route into Nelson. He says the Tasman council is also planning to widen Oxford St which the report identified as “too narrow” and “unsafe”. Between 3000 to 6000 cars a day travel on Oxford St which has two schools, a high number of businesses, the Richmond Fire Station and a number of intersections “Making turning difficult and unsafe”. T The opening of the Primary Health Organisation and Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s Public Health Service building on Queen St with approximately 100 employees has also added to the pressure on all day parking on Oxford St. Ironically, Judene says drivers avoiding the Gladstone Rd lights aren’t helping council convince NZTA there is a problem. “We are trying to tell NZTA we have a problem and yet the numbers show fewer driver are using the State Highway. “We know that’s because the drivers are avoiding the lights but for NZTA to spend money the numbers have to stack up - it’s a catch-22.”

Anzac’s dawn service moved to Trafalgar Park

Need it built now?

Andrew Board This Saturday’s Anzac Day commemorations will be the biggest ever, says the local RSA president, with between 5000 and 10,000 people expected. This year marks 100 years since the New Zealand and Australian soldiers landed on the beaches at Gallipoli during World War One. To commemorate the day the Nelson RSA, along with Nelson City Council, is hosting its dawn service at Trafalgar Park this year. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says the traditional home of the service, Anzac Park, is simply too small to host it this year. “Every year it grows and grows, but this year will be the biggest Anzac service ever.” The service will also include live music by brass and pipe bands, and the unveiling of a field of remembrance, each individually named for someone from the Nelson province who died in or as a result of World War I service. The crosses will be laid out on Trafalgar Park behind a temporary cenotaph. In other firsts, plans are underway to fly a Tiger Moth and replica Mustang over Trafalgar Park at the conclusion of the

RSA’s district president, Derek Nees, says this year’s dawn service will be particularly poignant. “It’s the centennial of an event which marked the beginning of nationhood of both New Zealand and Australia. People will want to come to remember and commemorate those who didn’t return from Gallipoli and other battles of the war.” The dawn parade will march down Trafalgar St from Millers Acre to Trafalgar Park at 5.45am with the dawn service to begin at 6am.

If there was one thing Wakefield farmer Rodney Biggs loved more than his family, it was his dogs. So it was appropriate a photo of Rodney with his dog was presented to the Waimea Sheep Dog Trial Club over the weekend in memory of his life. Rodney died suddenly last year aged just 38. He was a third generation farmer, president of the Waimea Sheep Dog  Trial Club and his wife Sarah says he loved working his dogs. “He was always bringing dogs in. If there was a dog that no one else wanted he’d work on it. He had the determination to get the best out of them.” The idea of a memorial photo to hang in the club came from his former boss and fellow sheep dog club member, John Levy. John says the club had trophies “for Africa” so a photo was a better way to remember Rodney. The photo was handed to the club by Rodney’s brother Kevin on Saturday during the club’s annual trial in Wakefield. It was followed by a minute’s silence before Rodney’s dog Chum let out ten seconds of barking that brought a few tears to eyes. Sarah says the death of her husband is still very raw but Rodney would have liked what they did for him on Satur

He would have liked this.” She says her husband was brought up in Tapawera and was definitely an “outdoors man”. “He just loved the outdoors. Even at home he’d have his tea and he’d be back outside again.” John says Rodney was well-known for

his love of dogs and at the age of eight was training them to jump through hoops at his school. He now looks after Chum and says Rodney was a “stunning employee”. “I didn’t view him as an employee, we were workmates. He was a healthy young man and a third generation Tapawera farmer. He was also a great guy.” More on the sheep dog trial on page 9.

CARS CAKED IN MUD: Three staff at Crombie Lockwood in Richmond had their cars splattered with mud from a truck that lost its load on Oxford St last week. “My partner texted me and said go check your car”, Crombie Lockwood’s Michelle Weir says. “We went outside and took photos because there were some big stones.” A total of four cars parked on the eastern side of Oxford St near Washbourn Gardens and about 30m of road were covered in mud.

Oil and gas exploration companies could be drilling in two conservation parks in the Tasman district, after they were included in the latest tenders for petroleum exploration permits announced by the government. Ninety-one square kilometres of Mount Richmond Forest Park and 417 square kilometres of Victoria Forest Park are included in the 2007 square kilometre West Coast Basin block titled 15WEC-R1. Richmond’s self-professed ‘accidental artist’ Georgia Barber and a true-to-label Michael Potter of Mapua joined seven other artists from around the Nelson-Tasman region at Sunday’s opening of their Texture Exhibition at The Old Post Office in Upper Moutere. Georgia was thrilled about exhibiting with so many different artists. “It’s really exciting and with the diversity of artists it is incredible”, she says. Georgia’s main piece is a pure white embossed Vairocana Buddha. “I’ve been watching it change through the day and the way it catches light and shadows. It’s very simple but amazing and effective”, says Georgia. “I’m a self-taught artist. This exhibition I taught myself to emboss and I am so happy with my piece, now it’s going to be part of a series called enlightenment.” Michael, who is a Mapuabased potter, was exhibiting three pieces that were inspired by shipwreck treasures. Gallery manager and Nelson artist, Fleur Wood has gathered over 20 pieces for the Texture Exhibition. “I wanted to bring a variety of artists into the Old Post Office to enjoy the space and share their talents with visitors and locals”, says Fleur. The exhibit features ceramics, paintings, illustrations, photographs and sculptures linking to the theme of texture. “The theme texture allows for broad interpretation and supports the idea that art adds texture to everyday life”, says Fleur. The Old Post Office, now

owned by Joanne Costar, reopened its doors in 2004 to sell produce, with the addition of the gallery in 2012. The gallery holds ongoing exhibitions, jewellery, art prints, textiles and children’s wear. “I think Nelson people are very supportive of local artists and food producers”, says Joanne. “We have a lot of tourists come into our store so it’s really important to display local talent.” The exhibition will run from April 19 through to May 24 at The Old Post Office in Upper Moutere with all works available for purchase. With only the tail of his aircraft sticking out, he was able to get to his life raft and tie it to the tail and waited to be rescued. A special Anzac legacy has been hand-made so that future generations will always remember their family members who fought in WWI and WWII. Aubrey Lumsden, who turns 93 next month, has been attending Anzac Day services since the end of World War II. To mark the Anzac WWI Centenary, Jan asked her mother, who is an avid knitter, if she would make her a shawl out of knitted poppies to wear at the commemorations. Wakefield hosts dog trial champs Tadmor’s Eion Herbert showed he is heading in the right direction as he prepares for next month’s national champs in Whanganui when he won two titles at the Waimea Sheep Dog Trials near Wakefield last week. Eion won his first national title last year when he teamed with Storm to win the long head final in Geraldine. The champion combination showed they are hitting good form again as they delivered a near perfect display to win the long head at the Waimea champs with 96 points. “Storm was second in the North Island champs in Taumarunui last year as well and then he won the Tux Challenge in January so he has been going well,” Eion says. Eion also teamed up with Pat to win the short head and yard and finish second in the long head at the Waimea champs. He also finished third and fourth in the short head with Bell and Storm respectively completing a successful twodays at the club’s champs. “Pat hasn’t done much so far but he is just starting to come to it so I’ll take him to nationals too. Bell is only coming-up three and is quite promising so I’ll be taking her to the Kaikoura to try and qualify her for nationals.” Graham Cole and Bull of Awatere won the zig-zag hunt while Maurice Haakma and Dan of Ward won the straight hunt. Although championships were dominated in both numbers and results by the blokes, Upper Mou-

Sure, there aren’t too many females here but I know all the guys so it’s no big deal.” Julie was unplaced in the long and short head events after having “just an average run”. Helicopter open day takes off

Lions tour could be bigger than world cups We’ve had the Rugby World Cup, the Cricket World Cup, the Crusaders and the Blacksticks, but deputy mayor Paul Matheson says a British and Irish Lions game could surpass them all. Nelson City Council has allocated half a million dollars in its long term plan if Nelson can secure a game during the Lions rugby tour to New Zealand in 2017. Paul says the region has proven itself as a place that can host international sporting events. The tour is one of the largest sports tours in the world and sees thousands of rugby fans from the UK and Ireland follow the team for more than a month. The Lions only visit New Zealand every 12 years and Nelson has thrown its hat in the ring to host one of the games. “I think the Lions tour will attract more interest because they have that base support that travels the world,” says Paul. “It could be bigger than the rugby or cricket world cups because you’ll see more of them on the ground and they love a hamburger or two.”

my winter power bills. Do you have any tips to help me keep my power bill in check? A: As we approach winter the two biggest contributors to your power bill will be hot water and space heating. Here are some ideas for reducing winter costs:  Find the cheapest power provider for your needs by going to: powerswitch.org.nz.  Consider a smooth pay option- this spreads out the cost of power insuring the same weekly payments year-round.  Check your hot water cylinder temperature; 60°C is high enough.  Insulate your hot water cylinder and check for cylinder leaks.  Conserve hot water eg. short showers & cold machine washes.  Heat pumps are cheaper than any other electric heater.  Only use the heat pump or heater when needed.  Check that the heat pump is set to Heat, NOT Auto or Cool.  Unflued gas heaters are the most expensive to run, make

The whirring of blades, the crushing of metal and the heat of fire, drew crowds to this year’s Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter annual Open Day on Sunday afternoon. The open day is the Helicopter’s major fundraiser for the public and featured a number of rescue demonstrations from the Rescue Helicopter crew, Fire Service, Coastguard, St John and Civil Defence. Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust communications and marketing manager, Paula Muddle, says around 3000 to 4000 people attended the event, raising $12,000 through bucket donations, scenic flights and raffles on the day.

A winch demonstration saw Nelson woman Cindy Day hoisted into the air by the helicopter and swung around, as crowds looked on swept by rotor wash. The helicopter crew also demonstrated how patients are loaded in and out of a helicopter on a stretcher. Chief crewman Paul Bryant says he had a fantastic time demonstrating how the helicopter works and talking with the public. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter operates 24/7, every day of the year. Watch all the action of the day unfold and an interview with Paul Bryant at www.nelsonlive. co.nz

I do encourage riders to up-skill. However, I’ve always thought it is very unfair to include moped statistics with motorcycles statistics as you rarely get a fully licensed or experienced rider using a moped/scooter. I hope ACC didn’t throw in a few off-road statistics also to justify the insane hike in registration costs a while back, as they did with moped statistics. RJ (via nelsonlive.co.nz).

Richmond sisters Rae Norgate and June Berkett’s say their father, Walter Maxted, didn’t talk much about WWI. Walter spent six horrific months fighting the Turks at Gallipoli and understandably he was reluctant to rekindle those terrible memories. But what both Rae, 83, and June, 90, do remember are the nightmares he suffered for years afterwards. “He was shot in the face at Gallipoli and said, by the time he got to the hospital in Malta, he could put his fingers through his cheek and around his jaw the hole was so big,” Rae says. “He wouldn’t often talk about the war but I do remember that and the nightmares he used to have - they were terrible.” Walter had volunteered for the 12th Nelson Mounted Rifles at the outbreak of WWI, sailing to Egypt with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on October 16, 1914. He landed at Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915 and was involved in fierce fighting for six months before being wounded and evacuated to Malta. Rae also recalls her father talking about the desperation of the Anzac troops who were exposed to Turkish fire as soon as they landed and later “ran out of ammunition, food and medical supplies”. “Dad told us the Turks would throw hand grenades at them and they’d pick them up and try and throw them back because they had no ammunition left. He said they were so desperate they would defecate into jam tins and threw them at the Turks. June says they still have some of the items their father brought back from Gallipoli including a poem, hand-written by an Australian soldier in the trenches. The family still has the original copy as well as their father’s army pay book which has an entry for four shillings for two weeks pay at Gallipoli. “The Australian soldier didn’t think he was going to make it so he gave the poem to my father who was in the bed next

Dad brought it home and we still have the original copy.” Although their father recovered from his physical wounds in Malta and later at Hornchurch Hospital in England before returning to New Zealand aboard the Corinthic in August 1916, June says it took him much longer to recover from the psychological wounds. June and Rae fondly remember him marching with the band in the Anzac Day Parades in Nelson. June says their father died in 1970 but sadly is not buried in the Returned Serviceman’s Cemetery because he wanted to be buried next to his wife Elva and that was not permitted until 1983.

Tech Clean aims to be the regions foremost property service and cleaning provider. Tech Clean pride themselves on offering a professional, cost effective solution to any maintenance project from general lawn and garden care, to painting, building repairs and cleaning. Their commercial cleaning services are backed up by expert industry knowledge and quality systems, processes and resources, and are put to use on facilities such as offices and schools, pre and post event cleaning, retail stores, end of tenancy cleans, warehouses and industrial premises. Part of these services also includes the professional clean up of trauma scenes, whether in a private home, or the result of an industrial accident. While many people will never encounter a traumatic situation such as suicide, homicide or other serious blood spills, in the unfortunate occurrence of such an event, decontamination and clean up of the area is vital, not only to ease what is an incredibly painful experience, but to eliminate the possibility of blood borne pathogens. Trauma cleaning involves removing or sanitising any object that has come in contact or been contaminated with blood or bodily fluids. When a trauma event has concluded and the lights and sirens of emergency vehicles have faded away, it is the owners of the premises that are faced with the aftermath and that can be pretty overwhelming. Tech Clean don’t just return the site to its original state, they bring discretion and compassion to their customers; genuinely

caring about their customers health and safety, and wellbeing. Tech Clean employs a systematic approach to cleaning that ensures each and every trauma scene is managed to prevent cross contamination or exposure to harmful materials by residents. Their trained service technicians are skilled in removing harmful biological contaminants to prevent the spread of viruses and pathogens such as Hepatitis B and C, MRSA, HIV or E.coli, as well as any lingering odours. As remediation specialists, Tech Clean has one primary goal; to restore their customer’s property and to a safe, and as close to pre event condition as possible. If you are facing any trauma situation, whether it is a suicide, homicide, serious blood spill, industrial accident or unattended death, Tech Clean are only a phone call away to help you get back to normal as quickly as possible and they will take as much time as you need to help you understand the processes, costs and payment options. Tech Clean are also available for many other services; specialising in difficult clean up situations requiring a higher level of technical remediation such as oil spills, chemical removal, dangerous goods recovery and bio-hazards. With tailored solutions for their clients, Tech Clean will ensure you are left with a well maintained, safe and hygienic home or business premise. Whenever you need the services of Tech Clean they are here for you, simply give them a call on 0508 832 425, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Business Update. Adv.

Simon Bloomberg

When the new YZF-R1 motorcycle was unveiled at Filco Farm and Sport in Nelson as part of its global launch last week, two of the people in the showroom had already had a sneak preview of Yamaha’s latest supersport model. Filco’s owner Dave Filer and one of his mechanics, Jeremy Read, were among just a handful of people to see the bike’s engine being developed and tested at Yamaha’s headquarters in Iwata in Japan. Jeremy and Dave had been invited to the factory after Jeremy was one of just 20 Yamaha mechanics selected from 33,000 applicants worldwide to compete in the Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix last October. Although Jeremy enjoyed the two-day competition, which tested a wide range of mechanic’s skills including diagnosing and repairing faults, motorcycle and component assembly and a theory examination, he says the highlight of their trip to Iwata was a visit to Yamaha’s headquarters. “It was absolutely the highlight of the trip, visiting the Yamaha factory. The security was so tight they took all our cellphones and cameras off us so nobody could take any photos and we were all dressed up like surgeons in an operating theatre so we didn’t contaminate anything. “We saw bits and pieces of the R1

It took 390 staff only 90 minutes to assemble a bike, test it on the dyno and then pack it for freighting - it was incredible.” Jeremy says he also enjoyed experiencing the Japanese culture and, surprisingly for a “meat and potatoes Kiwi bloke”, he also enjoyed the Japanese food. “It was my first trip to Japan and I was amazed by the courtesy and friendliness of all the Japanese people. I was also pleasantly surprised by the food - I made a decision to try everything and really enjoyed it.” Dave says it was a real honour for Filco to have a mechanic in the Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix and

he was proud of Jeremy’s top five finish. Jeremy also won the Customer Service section of the competition. “Jeremy worked really hard over the last four years to try and qualify for the competition so it was a real honour for him to qualify. He won the Australasian competition in 2013 to get there and he was the only mechanic from the Southern Hemisphere at Iwata.” Jeremy has worked at Filco for nine years, after leaving Nayland College and initially training as an engineer and then car mechanic. However, he has always been a motorcycle enthusiast, buying his first motorcycle off Dave 25 years ago. “It was a DT175cc. I used it to ride to school at Nayland.”

Authentic Thai’s new Thai Fried Chicken is a taste sensation not to be missed. Marinated in traditional Thai herbs, it has a lovely delicate flavour and the marination process reduces the amount of fat produced when frying, making it a healthier option that tastes divine. Authentic Thai may be Richmond’s newest takeaway, but owner Tina is a familiar face to many locals. For years she has been tempting the taste buds of Richmond residents with authentic Thai dishes from her mobile food caravan and she has decided to go one step further by open-

ing a more permanent option. Tina has over 20 years experience creating Thai food and is keen to broaden people’s experience of authentic Thai cuisine, both with the tried and true dishes on the menu and with exciting new dishes to be added in the future. Call in to enjoy a taste of Thailand; orders can be made by telephone or pop in anytime from 11am until 10pm on weekdays or 5pm until 10pm on weekends. Thai food has evolved from a number of different influences to give us the delicious dishes we love to eat today and there are five important taste elements you will notice in Thai cuisine. The first being bitterness that you get in citrus or unsweetened chocolate, saltiness, sourness, sweetness and umami. Umami describes a ‘meatiness’ or ‘savoury’ element that can be found in beef, lamb or cheese. These combine to create a pleasurable and mouth-watering plate of food that you can find served up in Richmond’s Poppy Thai. Another influence on the flavours is the person cooking and with a new chef and a new owner, Poppy Thai Richmond invites to you try their refreshed menu and Thai dining experience. To book a table give them a call on 544 2888; they’re open 5pm until late every night and 11:30am until 2:30pm Tuesday-Saturday. The team at The Village Cafe are gearing up to bring you a warm and delicious winter. Whether you’re after a bite to eat during your lunch hour or you want a quiet place to take a break from shopping, owner Amber Warren has a great selection of hot food to satisfy your hunger and warm up your winter days. Featuring on the winter menu, you’ll find some good wholesome meals including macaroni cheese, smoked fish pie, cottage pie, curried sausages and beef cobbler, a new addition to the menu that Amber says is already going fast. Their homemade food also includes a selection of pies and savouries, and mouth-watering frittatas that change daily. New Show H On the Brightside

This year is the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli Landings in Turkey by the ANZAC forces, and the start of the Anzac tradition. Like everywhere else in New Zealand and Australia, and in other parts of the world, we in Brightwater are going to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Anzac Day. Our 100th Anzac Day service starts at 9.00 am outside The Memorial Gates in front of the Brightwater Hall on Lord Rutherford Road, and will be followed afterwards with a special morning tea in the Brightwater Hall, complete with a 100th Anniversary cake to be cut. We urge you all to attend to honour those brave men and women who left our shores to protect us. Brightwater School have put together a display about Gallipoli that you will be able to see inside the Hall. To help give us an idea of the numbers to be catered for can you please pick up a free ticket from the Brightwater Four Square, Brightwater Motors or the Sprig and Fern. We would like to thank these businesses for their support and especially the Wanderers Sports Club for providing the catering. The Village Green has been given a makeover and tidy up with more to work to take place next month. As winter is almost on us, just a reminder to everyone to check your smoke alarms and replace the batteries. It is a very simple exercise and if you need help, feel free to ring the local Fire Service. Our next Community Association meeting will be on Monday 4 May at Brightwater School, commencing at 7.00.pm. There will be a presentation by Tasman District Council’s planner, Rose Biss, on the Brightwater Growth Strategy Plan that will start at 7.45pm. All are welcome to attend. Playgroup children get Firewise After an educational visit by the Fire Service which taught kids and parents the importance of smoke alarms, escape plans and safe meeting points, there was much anticipation of the planned fire engine visit by the Brightwater Volunteer Rural Fire Force. After a good look over the appliance and questions, it was time to do what fire engines

do best – squirt water. There was many a happy face, and even some very wet youngsters and parents. If you would like to come and enjoy the informal Plunket playgroup, it is held every Wednesday morning in the Brightwater Community Anglican Church Crèche building at 68 Waimea West Road, Brightwater from 9am to midday.

Thirteen of our girls went off to a great camp in a log cabin at Kenepuru Sounds just before the holidays. They had a great time and would like to thank the leaders and helpers who made it such fun. The new Guide programme is proving to be a real hit for the Guide section and they join the Pippins and Brownies with a new and exciting era in Guiding as a whole. Biscuits have done really well. We have only chocolate ones left and hope to sell all these by the end of the month. If you need some please

let your leaders know. We thank all parents and families for their great support and sterling efforts with this year’s campaign. They are much appreciated. Our local memorial

Like communities throughout New Zealand, Brightwater pauses and remembers those who have served our country on Anzac Day. Our local memorial gates, which the community erected and dedicated in Feb 1925, hold the names of the 22 men who were killed in WW1, as well as the 6 killed in WW2. However, there are no accurate records of the number of residents who left the district to serve. With the help of Nelson Museum, we have been able to get some idea. Their incomplete records show 88 men and one woman went from our district. A quarter of those who went did not come back. In addition to these people, there was, of course, all those served on the home front. This year, being 100 years since the invasion at Gallipoli, means as a

community we are making a special effort. The Brightwater Anzac service will begin at 9am, led by Rev Martin Harrison. Deputy Mayor, Tim King, is the guest speaker. Brightwater Scouts, Fire Party, Brightwater School and many other community groups will take part. After the service, the Community Association has organised morning tea. On Sunday at the local church services there will be multimedia reflection on sacrifice and service. We gather, not to glorify war, but to remember those that have served our community in the past and to celebrate the community we are, and challenge ourselves, how we are, and how we can serve. Rev Martin Harrison Brightwater Community Anglican Church.

Anglican Senior Care Waimea Anglican Senior Care is up and running again. In 2015 we hope to repeat some of our most successful events from 2014. These included the annual fashion parade; the Brightwater Garden Party and the overwhelmingly successful Christmas concert, ‘La Vida by Candlelight’. This final event for 2014 was made possible with the generous support of “La Vida” and enabled the Brightwater community to donate $1029 to Oxfam. It was wonderful to see Old St Paul’s church full to overflowing on the occasion. At the end of March we had two outings in quick succession. The Senior Citizens’ Expo at the Headingly Centre saw guests treated to informative seminars and a talk by double amputee, Mark Inglis, on positive aging. Armed with homemade muffins and drinks for a picnic morning tea the group also visited Isel House and gardens. All had a lovely time. Senior Care co-ordinator Nicola

Berthelsen is keen to organise a double-decker bus tour for the end of April but needs to know numbers in order to confirm a booking. If you are interested in this outing please contact Nicola. A reminder that Senior Care operates a range of weekly activities and support services including Exercise and Games – 10am Thursday at the Brightwater Community Church Hall - $2 donation; Community Luncheon – 12 Midday on the third Thursday of each month. A donation toward lunch is requested; home visiting; transport for medical appointments, grocery shopping and Senior Care activities A small and valued team of volunteers supports Nicola. Nelson Netball

There has been plenty of action in Nelson Netball circles and the first goal is yet to be attempted. The Annual General Meeting in February saw the end of Julie McGrath’s rotation on the Nelson Netball Board, while Andy Vincent resigned. Both Julie and Andy have made enormous contributions to Nelson Netball. Under the constitution there were two appointed positions vacant which were filled by Gary Cox and Les Edwards. Both men bring valuable attributes to the 2015 Board. Julie Baxendine was elected as Chairperson as Andy’s replacement. Leanne Cook has been co-opted onto the Board to join sitting members Jane Andrew and Carol Cook.

Dayna Whiting has been appointed as Netball Development Co-ordinator and has hit the ground running as she comes to terms with her new role. One of her first assignments was to organize the recent School Holiday programme. Over 90 Year 5 – 8 players were put through their paces, and by all accounts the programme was resounding success. Nelson Netball’s sub committees have all spent time together to prepare for the coming season. The Competitions Committee have, at this stage, got the most arduous task in organizing the grades, and have opted for eight team grades as opposed to the traditional six team competition. Premier 2 finalists Nelson College for

The Richmond Netball team are pictured celebrating their win in the Premier Grade in 2014 and are all set to take the court again in 2015. Girls A and Stoke Sun City Paint & Panel have taken the two extra spots in Premier 1. While teams each nominated a grade they wished to play in, the Competitions Committee have spent considerable time in arranging a draw for Grading Day on 2 May. Teams will play short-

ened games which will, in some grades, be scrutinized by a panel, and along with the results will determine grades for Round 1. There are 161 teams registered with 33 Senior, 78 Secondary and 50 Intermediate teams, with a significant increase in Secondary grades. Grading Day is

Netball Manager Chelsea Routhan has got her sleeves pulled up and is set for another extremely busy season. 2014 was a successful one, both on and off the court, as Chelsea managed her fiscal role to the highest level to finish the financial year in a sound position. A huge part of expenditure for Nelson Netball is the development of the game and representative expenses. Chelsea is constantly working to form sponsorship partners to assist in this vital area. Russells Curtains & Blinds are major sponsors of the Under 17’s, who have an extensive schedule with tournaments in Wellington and Mt Maunganui. Richmond Mall is the Under 13 sponsors for their campaign. The Games Officials Committee which encompasses Umpires as well as Technical Officials is convened by Deb Vincent. An Umpiring for Dummies seminar was well received last season and will again be held 1 May at 7pm at Saxton

Netball Pavilion. It is an informal session that can not only benefit your umpiring but also your play as rules and interpretation of rules can be clarified. Without a doubt it will be a couple of hours which will be well spent, and the confidence with a whistle will increase. A new initiative is that Senior 3 and lower (Senior, Collegiate and Intermediate) teams will provide an umpire for their own game each week. It is expected that umpires provided by teams will umpire in a professional and impartial manner to provide a good experience for all players on court. If the umpire is a coach of the team, then coaching can only take place at intervals, not while the game is in progress. If a player umpires then that person must umpire the entire game. Marilyn Milne is the Umpire Draw Steward and would welcome anyone willing to take up the whistle and can be contacted on 0275 471 117. The annual Geraldine Hodgson Tournament will be played at Anzac Weekend over Saturday afternoon and Sunday. The tournament will be contested over three grades with the addition of an Intermediate grade as well.

ber one, I just had to stay strong until the end, as I knew it was going to hurt, I was pretty ecstatic when I looked up and saw that I had won,” says Sam. Also representing New Zealand at the championships were Tasman Swim Club swimmers Caitlin Delaney, who finished 14th in the 16 year 100 metre breaststroke event, and Thomas Heaton who placed 5th in the 16 year 1500 metre freestyle and 15th in the 16 year 400 metre freestyle races. Nelson South Club swimmer Clara Foster made her first final in an international meet, placing 10th in the 15-year 100 metre breaststroke final with a time of 1min 15.06sec and backed it up with a 14th place in the 200m breaststroke race. The age group swimmers are already back in the pool, training hard for the National Age Group Championships in two week's time. “The swimming programme is clearly working, we are one of the hardest working squads in the country and it is starting to pay off,” says Sam.

Nelson’s Sam McKenzie has beaten Australia’s top ranked swimmers to win gold at the Australian Age Group Championships last week. Over 1700 swimmers from Australia and New Zealand competed at Sydney Olympic Park in the Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Group Championships. The meet is considered one of the best age group competitions in the world, with Australia being one of the strongest swimming nations. Sam broke the New Zealand age group record in the 100 metre freestyle event. The Tasman Swim Club member swam his fastest time of 52.02 seconds in the preliminary race, breaking the previous New Zealand record of 52.26 seconds held by Joshua Taylor-Martin of Gisborne. He followed that up with 52.06 seconds in the final to take away the prestigious gold medal. He also took home a silver medal in the 15 years 200 metre freestyle final. Showing off his versatility, he also took 14.44 seconds off his personal best time in the 1500 metre freestyle race to finish seventh. “When I broke the New Zealand record in the heats, I was confident going into the final and was ranked num-

Waimea Old Boys Rugby

Waimea sneak home against Nelson, now face Marlborough teams Simon Bloomberg B

Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys is looking forward to playing the Marlborough teams when the second round of the Tasman Tro Trophy and Car Company Nelson Bays divi division one rugby competition starts on Sat Saturday. Waimea defeated Nelson 28-25 last Satur Saturday to retain its unbeaten record and secure the Moller Cup for the first round of the Car Company Nelson Bays division one rugby competition. But Waimea coach Mark Milne says the team “wasn’t quite there men mentally” and will need to “lift our game” against Renwick at Jubilee Park on Satur Saturday. Waimea had to come back from a 10-0 deficit before levelling the score at 13-13 at half time against Nelson. The score was tied again at 25-25 late in the game before Rohan Saifoloi kicked a penalty 16 minutes from the end. “We only had 35 per cent of possession on Saturday and when we got it, we seemed to want to give it back to Nelson,” Mark says. Nelson coach Kade Heke says it was happy with how his players took it to Waimea, but disappointed to still be without a win five games into the club competition. “We needed everyone to put their hand up and I feel like we gave it everything. But we really do need the points now.”

He says he was happy with the decision to turn away a chance at tying the game. “They backed themselves to do it and I’m happy with what they chose. If it was a final it would have played out slightly different, but it was a team decision.” Mark says his team will need to show more focus this weekend. “Renwick have a big pack so our forwards will have to do better and front up this Saturday.” “It’s Renwick’s centenary too so they are hoping for a good year. They haven’t won a game yet but we don’t take any team’s lightly.” Mark says they always look forward to this stage of the competition because the Marlborough teams are an unknown quantity. “We always enjoy playing the Marlborough teams because we come up against new players and new game plans,” he says. Although Waimea has won all five games this season and is favoured to maintain its unbeaten record on Saturday, Mark says there’s no room for complacency. “We have had a good start, which is unusual for us, but we never, ever think we are the best team in the competition. Winning the first five games is pleasing but all that really counts is how we perform at the back-end of the season.” Waimea Old Boys senior B beat Nelson senior B 35-10 in their division two match on Saturday.

Nelson Waimea Gun Club results A glorious day awaited shooters to come and test their skills at the 2015 Nelson Waimea Gun Club 80 target Duck Shoot last weekend. Word must have got around town because 105 shooters turned up for the event. It was a fantastic sight at the Gun Club, the grounds looking immaculate and the car park full. Both local gun shops, The Gun Shop Motueka and Richmond Hunting & Fishing had display stands attracting much interest. The Gun Club’s Sports co-ordinator Paul Hedwig and his team had set out an amazing course and the feedback from shooters was nothing but positive. The course was almost completed before the rain came but the hardened duck shooters didn’t mind a wee bit of water. Vicki O’Connor put on a fabulous barbeque whilst everyone waited for the results to come out.

A huge thank you goes to all of the people who helped to make the day a great success. Results - Registered shooters: A Grade: 1st Chris Scully 77; 2nd Paul Hedwig 74; 3rd Martin O’Connor 74. B Grade: 1st Karen Scully 71; 2nd Hugh Owen 68; 3rd Barry Tait 68. C Grade: 1st Brent Nalder 68; 2nd Aiden Hogarth 67; 3rd Murray Smith 66.
