Students get taste of war The reality of fighting in the trenches at Gallipoli was graphically illustrated at Richmond School on Monday when children were given an interactive tour of an Anzac-themed display set up in the school grounds. During term two each year, the school focuses on one topic as part of their enquiry learning. This year the topic is Aotearoa and each week teachers focus on a specific subject, this week’s topic being Anzac Day. Its aim is to give children authentic learning experiences as opposed to just looking at pictures in a book and the Gallipoli display certainly exceeded expectations. The amazing collection of items included a WWI military ambulance and Jeep provided by Roger and Dot Humphries, a replica Vickers machine gun, original WWI rifles supplied by RSA

member Stuart Mirfin and army uniforms while teacher Nicole Lams brought her family’s Gallipoli medals. School caretaker Dean Wilkinson also found the school’s Roll of Honour and gave it a coat of varnish so it could be displayed outside an army tent guarded by pupils Lochy Mirfin and Matthew Galletly who were dressed in WWI New Zealand and Turkish army uniforms. Lochy says he couldn’t believe that one of the soldiers shown in a photo in the display was only 15. “He lied about his age to get in the army,” Lochy says. “He’s only five years older than me and he went to war - it’s really scary. Lochy says his great, great, great uncle Darcy was killed at Gallipoli.

Richmond roads ‘not working’

Commuters are using Richmond’s residential streets as state highways as they continue to avoid the traffic lights on Gladstone Rd and the problem will only get worse with key commercial developments planned for the town. That was one of the conclusions in the Tasman Regional Land Transport Plan for 2015-2021 presented to the Tasman District Council at their meeting last Thursday. The report concludes that

State Highway 6 is “often congested” during peak traffic and that the internal ring road around Richmond’s town centre was “starting to show signs of inefficiency”. As a result, drivers are using residential streets as “state highways’ to avoid the congestion with figures showing significant increases in traffic on Hill St, Champion Rd and Hart Rd since the lights were installed on Gladstone Rd between 2009 and 2010.

with the rapid residential development in Richmond South and a supermarket planned for the former Bay Nursery site on the corner of Bateup and Gladstone roads. Another consequence of drivers avoiding the lights on Gladstone Rd is that “we are getting a lot of speeding issues on Hill St and Champion Rd because they are nice wide roads,” Judene says. Council transport manager Gary Clark agrees that there “are no easy answers” but stresses the traffic congestion on Gladstone Rd can’t be resolved in isolation. However, Gary says council and the New Zealand Transport Agency are aware of the problem and will be commencing a study to find some solutions later this year. “It’s difficult because we only have two roads going from Richmond to Nelson and that puts a constraint on the options. I personally think that four-laning Gladstone Rd and Whakatu Drive through to Annesbrook is the best long term solution but that will cost a lot of money.” Gary says another option that had been raised by the Nelson City Council would be to extend

Hill St through to Suffolk Rd in Stoke to provide a third route into Nelson. He says the Tasman council is also planning to widen Oxford St which the report identified as “too narrow” and “unsafe”. Between 3000 to 6000 cars a day travel on Oxford St which has two schools, a high number of businesses, the Richmond Fire Station and a number of intersections “Making turning difficult and unsafe”. T The opening of the Primary Health Organisation and Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s Public Health Service building on Queen St with approximately 100 employees has also added to the pressure on all day parking on Oxford St. Ironically, Judene says drivers avoiding the Gladstone Rd lights aren’t helping council convince NZTA there is a problem. “We are trying to tell NZTA we have a problem and yet the numbers show fewer driver are using the State Highway. “We know that’s because the drivers are avoiding the lights but for NZTA to spend money the numbers have to stack up - it’s a catch-22.”

Anzac’s dawn service moved to Trafalgar Park

Andrew Board This Saturday’s Anzac Day commemorations will be the biggest ever, says the local RSA president, with between 5000 and 10,000 people expected. This year marks 100 years since the New Zealand and Australian soldiers landed on the beaches at Gallipoli during World War One. To commemorate the day the Nelson RSA, along with Nelson City Council, is hosting its dawn service at Trafalgar Park this year. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says the traditional home of the service, Anzac Park, is simply too small to host it this year. “Every year it grows and grows, but this year will be the biggest Anzac service ever.” The service will also include live music by brass and pipe bands, and the unveiling of a field of remembrance, each individually named for someone from the Nelson province who died in or as a result of World War I service. The crosses will be laid out on Trafalgar Park behind a temporary cenotaph. In other firsts, plans are underway to fly a Tiger Moth and replica Mustang over Trafalgar Park at the conclusion of the

If there was one thing Wakefield farmer Rodney Biggs loved more than his family, it was his dogs. So it was appropriate a photo of Rodney with his dog was presented to the Waimea Sheep Dog Trial Club over the weekend in memory of his life. Rodney died suddenly last year aged just 38. He was a third generation farmer, president of the Waimea Sheep Dog  Trial Club and his wife Sarah says he loved working his dogs. “He was always bringing dogs in. If there was a dog that no one else wanted he’d work on it. He had the determination to get the best out of them.” The idea of a memorial photo to hang in the club came from his former boss and fellow sheep dog club member, John Levy. John says the club had trophies “for Africa” so a photo was a better way to remember Rodney. The photo was handed to the club by Rodney’s brother Kevin on Saturday during the club’s annual trial in Wakefield. It was followed by a minute’s silence before Rodney’s dog Chum let out ten seconds of barking that brought a few tears to eyes. Sarah says the death of her husband is still very raw but Rodney would have liked what they did for him on Satur

He would have liked this.” She says her husband was brought up in Tapawera and was definitely an “outdoors man”. “He just loved the outdoors. Even at home he’d have his tea and he’d be back outside again.” John says Rodney was well-known for

his love of dogs and at the age of eight was training them to jump through hoops at his school. He now looks after Chum and says Rodney was a “stunning employee”. “I didn’t view him as an employee, we were workmates. He was a healthy young man and a third generation Tapawera farmer. CARS CAKED IN MUD: Three staff at Crombie Lockwood in Richmond had their cars splattered with mud from a truck that lost its load on Oxford St last week. “My partner texted me and said go check your car”, Crombie Lockwood’s Michelle Weir says. “We went outside and took photos because there were some big stones.” A total of four cars parked on the eastern side of Oxford St near Washbourn Gardens and about 30m of road were covered in mud.

Oil and gas exploration companies could be drilling in two conservation parks in the Tasman district, after they were included in the latest tenders for petroleum exploration permits announced by the government. Ninety-one square kilometres of Mount Richmond Forest Park and 417 square kilometres of Victoria Forest Park are included in the 2007 square kilometre West Coast Basin block titled 15WEC-R1. The block extends from Murchison north to Mt Richmond and is one of seven included in the tender which was announced by the Minister of

Local artists join for exhibition

Richmond’s self-professed ‘accidental artist’ Georgia Barber and a true-to-label Michael Potter of Mapua joined seven other artists from around the Nelson-Tasman region at Sunday’s opening of their Texture Exhibition at The Old Post Office in Upper Moutere. Georgia was thrilled about exhibiting with so many different artists. “It’s really exciting and with the diversity of artists it is incredible”, she says. Georgia’s main piece is a pure white embossed Vairocana Buddha. “I’ve been watching it change through the day and the way it catches light and shadows. It’s very simple but amazing and effective”, says Georgia. “I’m a self-taught artist. This exhibition I taught myself to emboss and I am so happy with my piece, now it’s going to be part of a series called enlightenment.” Michael, who is a Mapuabased potter, was exhibiting three pieces that were inspired by shipwreck treasures. Michael finished the three vases in a crater glaze that made them look like “an archaeological treasure with calcium

The exhibit features ceramics, paintings, illustrations, photographs and sculptures linking to the theme of texture. “The theme texture allows for broad interpretation and supports the idea that art adds texture to everyday life”, says Fleur. The Old Post Office, now

owned by Joanne Costar, reopened its doors in 2004 to sell produce, with the addition of the gallery in 2012. The gallery holds ongoing exhibitions, jewellery, art prints, textiles and children’s wear. “I think Nelson people are very supportive of local artists and food producers”, says Joanne. “We have a lot of tourists come into our store so it’s really important to display local talent.” The exhibition will run from April 19 through to May 24 at The Old Post Office in Upper Moutere with all works available for purchase. When Kina kids, Zefa, Jessie and Tide Fa’avae were thinking of ways to raise funds for Purple Cake Day they came up with a colour-coordinated way of doing it - climb the 1532m high Purple Top in the Richmond Ranges. And the three youngsters achieved their goal, summiting Purple Top with their parents Jodie and Nathan last Tuesday and raising $1000 for Purple Cake Day through their Give A Little page. “The hardest part of the hike was over Little Rintoul which had some steep drops and scree,” Jessie says. “We aimed

to raise $1000 for our Purple Cake challenge and we did it.” Tide says it was “a great walk and nice to raise some money.” It was the third year Zefa, Jessie and Tide have gone on an adventure to raise funds for Purple Cake Day. Last year they kayaked from Totaranui to Marahau and the year before they cycled the Otago Rail Trail. Family of war heroes ready for Anzac Day Monique Bergman

A special Anzac legacy has been hand-made so that future generations will always remember their family members who fought in WWI and WWII. Aubrey Lumsden, who turns 93 next month, has been attending Anzac Day services since the end of World War II. Her daughter, Jan Phipps joins her each year to remember her grandfather and father who served in WWI and WWII. To mark the Anzac WWI Centenary, Jan asked her mother, who is an avid knitter, if she would make her a shawl out of knitted poppies to wear at the commemorations. Jan, who is President of Club Waimea, will wear the shawl this Anzac Day and says it is now a cherished family heirloom for her and her family. Wakefield hosts dog trial champs Tadmor’s Eion Herbert showed he is heading in the right direction as he prepares for next month’s national champs in Whanganui when he won two titles at the Waimea Sheep Dog Trials near Wakefield last week. Eion won his first national title last year when he teamed with Storm to win the long head final in Geraldine. The champion combination showed they are hitting good form again as they delivered a near perfect display to win the long head at the Waimea champs with 96 points. “Storm was second in the North Island champs in Taumarunui last year as well and then he won the Tux Challenge in January so he has been going well,” Eion says. Eion also teamed up with Pat to win the short head and yard and finish second in the long head at the Waimea champs. He also finished third and fourth in the short head with Bell and Storm respectively completing a successful twodays at the club’s champs. “Pat hasn’t done much so far but he is just starting to come to it so I’ll take him to nationals too. Bell is only coming-up three and is quite promising so I’ll be taking her to the Kaikoura to try and qualify her for nationals.” Graham Cole and Bull of Awatere won the zig-zag hunt while Maurice Haakma and Dan of Ward won the straight hunt. Helicopter open day takes off

Lions tour could be bigger than world cups We’ve had the Rugby World Cup, the Cricket World Cup, the Crusaders and the Blacksticks, but deputy mayor Paul Matheson says a British and Irish Lions game could surpass them all. Nelson City Council has allocated half a million dollars in its long term plan if Nelson can secure a game during the Lions rugby tour to New Zealand in 2017. Paul says the region has proven itself as a place that can host international sporting events. The tour is one of the largest sports tours in the world and sees thousands of rugby fans from the UK and Ireland follow the team for more than a month. The Lions only visit New Zealand every 12 years and Nelson has thrown its hat in the ring to host one of the games. “I think the Lions tour will attract more interest because they have that base support that travels the world,” says Paul. “It could be bigger than the rugby or cricket world cups because you’ll see more of them on the ground and they love a hamburger or two.”

The whirring of blades, the crushing of metal and the heat of fire, drew crowds to this year’s Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter annual Open Day on Sunday afternoon. The open day is the Helicopter’s major fundraiser for the public and featured a number of rescue demonstrations from the Rescue Helicopter crew, Fire Service, Coastguard, St John and Civil Defence. Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust communications and marketing manager, Paula Muddle, says around 3000 to 4000 people attended the event, raising $12,000 through bucket donations, scenic flights and raffles on the day.

A winch demonstration saw Nelson woman Cindy Day hoisted into the air by the helicopter and swung around, as crowds looked on swept by rotor wash. The helicopter crew also demonstrated how patients are loaded in and out of a helicopter on a stretcher. Chief crewman Paul Bryant says he had a fantastic time demonstrating how the helicopter works and talking with the public. Richmond sisters Rae Norgate and June Berkett’s say their father, Walter Maxted, didn’t talk much about WWI. Walter spent six horrific months fighting the Turks at Gallipoli and understandably he was reluctant to rekindle those terrible memories. But what both Rae, 83, and June, 90, do remember are the nightmares he suffered for years afterwards. “He was shot in the face at Gallipoli and said, by the time he got to the hospital in Malta, he could put his fingers through his cheek and around his jaw the hole was so big,” Rae says. “He wouldn’t often talk about the war but I do remember that and the nightmares he used to have - they were terrible.” Walter had volunteered for the 12th Nelson Mounted Rifles at the outbreak of WWI, sailing to Egypt with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on October 16, 1914. He landed at Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915 and was involved in fierce fighting for six months before being wounded and evacuated to Malta. Rae also recalls her father talking about the desperation of the Anzac troops who were exposed to Turkish fire as soon as they landed and later “ran out of ammunition, food and medical supplies”. “Dad told us the Turks would throw hand grenades at them and they’d pick them up and try and throw them back because they had no ammunition left. He said they were so desperate they would defecate into jam tins and threw them at the Turks. June says they still have some of the items their father brought back from Gallipoli including a poem, hand-written by an Australian soldier in the trenches. The family still has the original copy as well as their father’s army pay book which has an entry for four shillings for two weeks pay at Gallipoli. “The Australian soldier didn’t think he was going to make it so he gave the poem to my father who was in the bed next

Dad brought it home and we still have the original copy.” Although their father recovered from his physical wounds in Malta and later at Hornchurch Hospital in England before returning to New Zealand aboard the Corinthic in August 1916, June says it took him much longer to recover from the psychological wounds. June and Rae fondly remember him marching with the band in the Anzac Day Parades in Nelson. When the new YZF-R1 motorcycle was unveiled at Filco Farm and Sport in Nelson as part of its global launch last week, two of the people in the showroom had already had a sneak preview of Yamaha’s latest supersport model. Filco’s owner Dave Filer and one of his mechanics, Jeremy Read, were among just a handful of people to see the bike’s engine being developed and tested at Yamaha’s headquarters in Iwata in Japan. Jeremy and Dave had been invited to the factory after Jeremy was one of just 20 Yamaha mechanics selected from 33,000 applicants worldwide to compete in the Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix last October. Although Jeremy enjoyed the two-day competition, which tested a wide range of mechanic’s skills including diagnosing and repairing faults, motorcycle and component assembly and a theory examination, he says the highlight of their trip to Iwata was a visit to Yamaha’s headquarters. “It was absolutely the highlight of the trip, visiting the Yamaha factory. The security was so tight they took all our cellphones and cameras off us so nobody could take any photos and we were all dressed up like surgeons in an operating theatre so we didn’t contaminate anything. “We saw bits and pieces of the R1

It took 390 staff only 90 minutes to assemble a bike, test it on the dyno and then pack it for freighting - it was incredible.” Jeremy says he also enjoyed experiencing the Japanese culture and, surprisingly for a “meat and potatoes Kiwi bloke”, he also enjoyed the Japanese food. “It was my first trip to Japan and I was amazed by the courtesy and friendliness of all the Japanese people. I was also pleasantly surprised by the food - I made a decision to try everything and really enjoyed it.” Dave says it was a real honour for Filco to have a mechanic in the Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix and

he was proud of Jeremy’s top five finish. Jeremy also won the Customer Service section of the competition. “Jeremy worked really hard over the last four years to try and qualify for the competition so it was a real honour for him to qualify. He won the Australasian competition in 2013 to get there and he was the only mechanic from the Southern Hemisphere at Iwata.” Jeremy has worked at Filco for nine years, after leaving Nayland College and initially training as an engineer and then car mechanic. However, he has always been a motorcycle enthusiast, buying his first motorcycle off Dave 25 years ago. “It was a DT175cc. I used it to ride to school at Nayland.”
